Joseph Schimmoller

Ascend Online - Congressional Debate Junior Instructor

Involved in Speech and Debate for 9 years, including 4 in Congressional Debate, Joseph Schimmoller is a 2026 National Speech & Debate Tournament finalist, placing 14th in the nation. He was ranked 4th in California and 14th nationally, with over 2,000 NSDA points and Academic All-American recognition.

Joseph has reached elimination rounds at some of the country’s most competitive tournaments, including semifinalist finishes at the California State Championship, Florida Blue Key, Glenbrooks, Barkley Forum, and the Tournament of Champions. Additionally, he placed 4th at the Peninsula Invitational, 2nd at MLK and championed the National Speech & Debate Season Opener.

Joseph has earned 10 career bids to the Tournament of Champions and led the 2025–2026 season in bids. He also served as captain of the Loyola High School Congressional Debate team during his senior year.

Joseph believes debate starts with communication. Research and ‘winning on the flow’ matter, but they only become persuasive when a speaker is clear, confident, concise, and genuinely enjoyable to listen to. He teaches students to be the breath of fresh air in their chambers, with an emphasis on effective, and powerful communication rather than empty technicality. His goal is for students to leave debate with the ability to communicate an idea clearly in their careers, relationships, and everyday lives.

Outside of debate, Joseph loves LEGOs, movies (especially Star Wars), and exploring the world around him.
